The Hydrorain or Hydro-Rain or Hardie HR-1 was known by many names, and was an excellent valve. The photo shows the entire valve installed with the original flat sided solenoid. Don't be fooled if your HR-1 has a round solenoid, the replacement solenoids have been round-sided for many many years. If your valve looks like the one in the photo it is an HR-1. The tip-off is the unique bleed screw top - round, but with four tips sticking out almost in a cross shape. Most HR-1's were black, but ones manufactured in Mexico were identical, but red in color.
These Diaphragms will also fit the very old EV Series of Rainbird valves which will look exactly like the Hardie HR-1 or Hydro Rain Valve shown in the photos.
It also makes no difference if your HR-1 valve is a Flow Control or non-Flow Control model - the diaphragm is the same for either model.
Click on the link (lower right) for a peek at the diaphragm itself. This diaphragm is a 1 inch diaphragm which fits the standard 1 inch HR-1 valve. We also carry the larger one and one-half inch diaphragms. The valve shown in photo does not have flow control.
The HR-1 needs to have the diaphragms changed out every 3 or 4 years. If the diaphragm isn't replaced, zone pressure will begin to slowly lessen, until the heads don't want to pop up. Other symptoms of a bad diaphragm include noise coming from the valve or when you turn a zone on, the heads seem to jump up and down without staying all the way up. A bad diaphragm can aslo refuse to operate at all.
With a valve problem, people tend to blame the solenoid part of the valve, but 99% of valve problems are caused by the diaphragm not by the solenoid. In diagnosing a valve problem, have somebody click the zone off and on. If you can hear the solenoid click as they do this, the solenoid is usually working correctly and the problem is almost always with the diaphragm.
